If you could describe you and ÑDz©ÌåÓý¹ÙÍø in just one word, what would it be?

Resilient.

ÑDz©ÌåÓý¹ÙÍø has a long history of evolving and adapting to the changing world around it, to meet the new conditions of its time. For my part, my career has been a journey with many twists and turns, where I have seized opportunities that have taken me outside of my comfort zone and needed me to adapt to different roles and situations.

Why did you choose ÑDz©ÌåÓý¹ÙÍø?

For me, it was the focus on technology as a centre of excellence and its many connections with industry that were the key deciding factors. I felt that I wasn’t simply taking a course but really being prepared for a future career.

How would you describe the learning environment and support at ÑDz©ÌåÓý¹ÙÍø?

I don’t believe I would have achieved all that I have in my career had it not been for the empathy and support of my lecturers at university. Going through a difficult time in my second year, it was the intervention of an amazing lecturer who quietly and thoughtfully reached out to offer their help, that was transformative.

How well do you feel ÑDz©ÌåÓý¹ÙÍø prepared you for your career?

I feel ÑDz©ÌåÓý¹ÙÍø gave me a huge head start in my career. The real-world industry experience gained in my final year project enabled me then, in interviews, to confidently discuss the challenges faced by that business and the approach I had taken in working with all stakeholders to deliver an IT solution that not only met their requirements but also improved their processes.

Tell us about your current role and what a typical day looks like?

I have transitioned from an executive to a non-executive career, which means that I now sit on several Board’s as both a director and trustee. On a typical day I may be communicating with executives and board colleagues from each organisation regarding various challenges being faced or working with stakeholders to discuss potential solutions and approaches to be taken. It’s very dynamic, and no two days are the same!

What are you currently working on or excited about for the future?

I’m working on fundraising strategies for two charities for which I’m a Trustee, and a growth strategy for a new start-up business that is launching in the North-East. I’m excited by the opportunity for each organisation to make a real impact in the lives of people right across the country, and to be able to play a part in that.

Imagine you’re back at ÑDz©ÌåÓý¹ÙÍø as a guest speaker – what would you love to share with the students?

I have been in the fortunate position of being back at ÑDz©ÌåÓý¹ÙÍø as a guest speaker, and shared these three tips:

• See your career as a journey with twists and turns rather than a straight line, always stay curious and open to opportunities, be ready to step outside your comfort zone!
• Industry projects provide real world experience and an opportunity to development skills that will set you apart from others, get involved!
• Build your network – I was recommended for my first corporate role by an ÑDz©ÌåÓý¹ÙÍø student from the year above me. You never know what future door a person in your network may open for you!
